Emergency Department: entry, triage, waiting and child presentations
| Emergency question | Answer | Action for patients/carers |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I enter? | Use the Emergency Department entrance via Rodgerson Road. | Use the short-term Emergency drop-off area only for drop-off/pick-up, not long parking. |
| Is Emergency open 24/7? | Yes. Eastern Health Box Hill Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. | Call 000 first if symptoms are life-threatening. |
| What happens first? | A triage nurse assesses the urgency of the problem and places patients into one of five categories: Resuscitation, Emergency, Urgent, Semi-urgent or Non-urgent. | Explain the main symptom, when it started, what changed and any major conditions or medicines. |
| Why do some people go in first? | The most seriously ill patients are prioritised and may see a clinician immediately. | Do not compare by arrival time. Tell staff if your condition changes. |
| Can children attend? | Eastern Health says its Emergency Departments include purpose-built waiting and treatment areas for children. | Bring the child’s Medicare card, medication details, allergy details and any relevant GP letters. |
| How long will I wait? | Wait time depends on triage category, seriousness of condition and department activity. The wait-time page shows first consultation wait only, not total time in Emergency. | If pain, breathing, bleeding, confusion or symptoms worsen, tell a staff member immediately. |
| What if I leave? | Eastern Health asks patients to speak with a staff member if their condition changes or if they leave the Emergency Department of their own accord. | Do not leave after triage without telling staff. |
Micro guide: before going to Emergency
- Call 000 for life-threatening symptoms.
- Use Rodgerson Road for Box Hill Hospital Emergency.
