Emergency micro-steps
- Call 000 for life-threatening symptoms.
- Use Hollows Lane / Emergency signage for ED drop-off.
- Bring Medicare card, photo ID, medicine list and allergy details when safe.
- Tell triage staff immediately if the patient is getting worse, is pregnant, is a child, needs an interpreter, has a disability support need or has cultural support needs.
- For non-urgent advice, call 13 HEALTH before travelling if you are unsure what care pathway is right.
Specialist appointments, referrals, waitlist categories and appointment changes
SCUH specialist outpatient appointments usually start with a GP or specialist referral. The referral must include relevant test results and health information so the hospital can decide urgency and the right clinic pathway.
Referral micro-steps
- Your GP or specialist outside Queensland Health sends a referral.
- The referral includes your condition, relevant test results and health information.
- The hospital reviews urgency and decides if you are added to a waiting list or given an appointment.
- You receive advice by letter, phone or SMS when your appointment is ready.
- If your condition changes while waiting, keep seeing your GP and update the hospital if needed.
Change or cancel appointment
- Call 1300 270 773 if you need to cancel, reschedule, update contact details or ask a waitlist question.
- Use the number on your appointment letter if a service-specific number is listed.
- Tell the hospital if you no longer need the appointment so another patient can be booked.
- Ask for an interpreter at least 2 weeks before the appointment.
- Confirm your location code before travelling.
Referral and waiting-list rules that matter
| Topic | Official rule | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | Recommended appointment time up to 30 days. | Ask your GP what warning signs mean you should seek urgent care while waiting. |
| Category 2 | Recommended appointment time up to 90 days. | Keep GP reviews current and update hospital if symptoms change. |
| Category 3 | Recommended appointment time up to 365 days. | Tell the hospital if contact details change or you no longer need the appointment. |
| Unavailable for appointment | If unavailable too long, the case may be reviewed. Limits listed: Category 1 up to 15 calendar days, Category 2 up to 45 days, Category 3 up to 90 days. | Call early if holiday, illness or work means you cannot accept appointment dates. |
| Confirming appointment | Once you receive a letter, you need to call the clinic and confirm. If not confirmed, appointment may be offered to someone else. | Call as soon as you receive the appointment letter. |
| Medicare bulk billing | You may be asked to sign a Medicare form so the hospital can bulk bill Medicare. | Bring Medicare card and keep referrals current. |
| New referral timing | GP referrals may be needed yearly for bulk billing; specialist referrals may need renewal every 3 months. | Ask your GP before repeat clinic visits if referral validity is unclear. |
| No referral needed | Emergency treatment, urgent mental health care, sexual health clinics and eligible dental care may not need standard specialist referral. | Use the correct urgent pathway instead of waiting for outpatient referral if the problem is urgent. |
What to bring to a specialist appointment
- Medicare card.
- Appointment letter and questions for the doctor.
- Test results, reports and scans such as X-rays, bone scans or ultrasounds.

Medicare, outpatient costs, private insurance and non-Medicare patients
Public outpatient with Medicare
If you are a public patient with a Medicare card, outpatient appointments are generally free. You need to bring your Medicare card to each appointment.
Possible extra costs
Some items may still cost money, including pharmaceuticals, home oxygen, aids and appliances, surgical supplies, prostheses, dental services, glasses or hearing aids depending on the care.
Without Medicare
If Medicare eligibility or another funding source cannot be confirmed, you may be responsible for full treatment costs and may need to pre-pay or sign financial consent.
Travel support
Patients who live in rural or remote areas and travel more than 50 km to access specialist medical services may be eligible for the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme.
Cost-risk questions to ask before attending

| Overseas visitor | “Does reciprocal healthcare, OSHC or travel insurance apply?” | Some patients may not need to pay, but eligibility must be confirmed. |
| Medicine after discharge | “Will I need to pay for discharge medicines?” | Inpatient medicines may be covered, but medicines after discharge can attract PBS or full-price costs. |
