The Children’s Emergency Department is separate from the main entrance and is located near the intersection of Hawkesbury Road and Helen Street, between the children’s hospital and Westmead Hospital.

Use your child’s latest appointment letter, SMS or clinic message for the exact building, level and clinic. The hospital campus is large and not every appointment uses the same entrance.

Check official directions before travelling

Open the official Westmead directions and transport page .

After opening the page:
  1. Confirm that your destination is The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
  2. Check whether you are going to the main hospital, Outpatients or Children’s Emergency.
  3. If using public transport, compare train, bus and Parramatta Light Rail options.
  4. Leave extra time for walking, parking and finding the correct clinic.

How Children’s Hospital outpatient appointments work

Most outpatient services require both a referral and an appointment. The hospital says a referral may come from your child’s GP, paediatrician or specialist, depending on the clinic.

  1. Get the correct referral. Ask the referring clinician to use the service requirements for the clinic your child needs.
  2. The referral is submitted. The hospital uses Consultmed for many outpatient referrals. A referring clinician can submit the referral securely, and parents or carers who already have a referral may be able to upload it through the secure portal.
  3. Make sure your email is included. The hospital uses the email on the referral to send referral-tracking updates.
  4. The referral is reviewed. Clinic teams assess whether the referral is suitable and how urgently the child should be seen.
  5. Wait for appointment information. Follow the hospital’s letter, email, SMS or clinic instructions once a booking is made.

Open the official Children’s Hospital at Westmead Outpatients page .

After opening the Outpatients page:
  1. Check the referral section for the current process.
  2. Use the secure referral upload option only if you already have an appropriate referral.
  3. Check the clinic-specific contact information if your child is attending Orthopaedics, Eye Clinic or another listed service.
  4. Use the hospital’s referral tracking updates rather than repeatedly resubmitting the referral.

Outpatients contact and check-in

The main Outpatients Clinics are on Level 2 of the Banksia Building, on the same level as the main entrance.

General Outpatients phone (02) 7825 2525
Medical treatment / appointment enquiries (02) 7825 3777
Outpatients location Level 2, Banksia Building
General Outpatients email SCHN-CHW-Outpatients@health.nsw.gov.au

When your child arrives for an outpatient appointment, the hospital currently provides three check-in options: a Check-In kiosk, the online Patient Portal or reception staff. After check-in, you receive a ticket number and instructions on what to do next.

The Patient Portal can also show appointment information, clinic messages, reminders, forms and resources, and can be used to request appointment changes where available.

What to bring to your child’s appointment

The hospital recommends bringing information that helps staff understand your child’s current care and avoids delays during the visit.

  • Your child’s appointment information.
  • Medicare card.
  • Health insurance information if applicable.
  • Blue Book, immunisation information or other child health records.
  • A current medication and treatment list.
  • The medicines themselves if the clinic has asked you to bring them.
  • Mobility, feeding or communication equipment your child uses.
  • Your GP’s name and contact details.
  • Your child’s regular paediatrician’s details, if applicable.
  • Relevant imaging, X-rays, pathology results or reports if requested.
Time planning: an appointment time does not always mean your child will leave at that time. The hospital advises families that some clinic visits may take several hours. Bring any medicines, feeds, equipment and comfort items your child may need during a longer visit.

Children’s Emergency Department

The Children’s Emergency Department provides urgent and emergency care to newborns through to adolescents up to age 16. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Emergency Department is at the intersection of Hawkesbury Road and Helen Street, Westmead. It is approximately 200 metres from the main hospital entrance.

  • Call 000 if your child’s condition appears immediately life-threatening.
  • Emergency patients are assessed according to clinical urgency.
  • Tell staff immediately if your child’s condition becomes worse while waiting.
  • For mild or routine illness, the hospital recommends contacting your local GP or regular health provider where appropriate.

Open the official Children’s Emergency Department page .

If your child needs urgent care:
  1. Call 000 first if there is immediate danger or it is unsafe to transport your child yourself.
  2. If attending directly, follow signs to Children’s Emergency on Hawkesbury Road.
  3. Use the 15-minute Emergency drop-off zone only for drop-off or pick-up.
  4. Tell triage staff straight away if breathing, consciousness, pain or other symptoms worsen.

Train, bus and Parramatta Light Rail

There is a bus stop and a Parramatta Light Rail stop directly outside the hospital. Westmead railway station is about 1 kilometre away, approximately a 15-minute walk according to the hospital’s directions page.

Use Transport for NSW to plan the exact trip for your child’s appointment date.

Public transport micro-guide:
  1. Enter “The Children’s Hospital at Westmead” as your destination.
  2. Set the time you need to arrive at the hospital, not just the appointment start time.
  3. Compare train plus walking with bus or light rail options.
  4. Add extra time if your child uses mobility equipment or you are travelling with medical supplies.

Visiting hours and staying with your child

Westmead inpatient units currently list visiting hours from 10am to 8pm, with a rest period during the day. During the ward’s rest period, only parents and carers can remain with the child.

Two parents or carers can generally be with a patient during the day. In most areas, one parent or carer can stay overnight. Intensive care, mental health and some specialist units use different arrangements, so check with the ward before planning an overnight stay.

Check current Children’s Hospital visiting guidelines .

Before visiting:
  1. Confirm the child’s ward or unit.
  2. Ask about the unit’s daytime rest period.
  3. Check whether your child’s unit has tighter visitor limits.
  4. Do not visit if you have a cold or may have been exposed to a contagious illness.

Interpreter and family support

Professional interpreters are available for families who need language or Auslan support. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead uses the Western Sydney Local Health District Health Care Interpreter Service.

Hospital staff can arrange face-to-face, telephone or video interpreting. The service number listed for staff bookings is (02) 9912 3800. Families should tell their doctor, nurse or clinic team that an interpreter is needed; only healthcare providers can book the hospital interpreter.

Read the official interpreter information .

If your family needs an interpreter:
  1. Tell the clinic which language or Auslan support is required.
  2. Ask for the interpreter request to be recorded before the appointment.
  3. Confirm the arrangement with the clinic if communication support is essential for consent or complex discussions.

Medical records and feedback
