Micro guide: your Emergency journey

Step What it means What you should do
1. Arrive / ambulance arrival Emergency staff begin assessment and safety checks. Tell staff immediately if symptoms worsen while waiting.
2. Triage A nurse assesses urgency. Emergency patients are seen by clinical need, not arrival order. Describe the main symptom clearly, when it started, and any high-risk history.
3. Registration Staff collect identity, Medicare, DVA, concession, insurance or billing details. Give accurate phone, address, next-of-kin and payment/claim information if relevant.
4. Tests or investigations Blood tests, imaging, monitoring or specialist review may be needed. There may be waits for investigations depending on the number of patients needing them.
5. Plan A doctor explains results and next steps when available. Ask what happens next: discharge, short stay, ward admission, transfer or follow-up.

Bring to Emergency if safely possible

  • Medicare card, DVA card, concession card or private health insurance card if relevant.
  • Current medication list, including prescriptions, vitamins, supplements and non-prescription medicines.
  • Allergy or adverse drug reaction information.
  • Recent GP letters, specialist letters, scans, pathology, discharge summaries or imaging reports.
  • Mobility aid, glasses, hearing aid, communication support item or carer contact.
  • TAC, WorkCover or accident claim details if the emergency relates to transport or workplace injury.

Specialist Outpatient appointments, referrals and booking changes

Alfred Health Specialist Outpatient Clinics are scheduled services. They are not an emergency service. Most patients need a referral from a GP, another specialist doctor or an Alfred Health doctor before they can be seen.

Outpatient contact details

Appointment formats

  • Face-to-face appointment
  • Telehealth video conference
  • Telephone appointment
  • SMS reminders are sent if Alfred Health has your mobile number.

Micro guide: how outpatient referral works

Step What happens Action for patient or referrer
1. Referral is prepared A GP, specialist doctor or Alfred Health doctor sends the referral. The referral should include the presenting problem and the service/clinic requested.
2. Referral is sent Alfred Health supports eReferrals. Referrals can also be sent to the outpatient referral email or fax. Use Consultmed eReferral where possible. Otherwise email op.referrals@alfred.org.au or fax (03) 9076 6938.
3. Referral is entered If your mobile number is listed, Alfred Health says SMS confirmation is usually sent once the referral is entered into the system, commonly within 24-48 hours. If you do not have a mobile number, notification may come by post.
4. Clinical triage A doctor or nurse reviews urgency based on the referral information. If symptoms worsen, contact your GP/referrer. Specialist Outpatients is not an emergency service.
5. Appointment or waitlist Depending on urgency and clinic capacity, you will be contacted with an appointment time or waitlist information. Keep phone, email and postal contact details current.

Change or cancel an outpatient appointment

Situation What to do Important warning
Appointment is less than 3 working days away Call (03) 9076 2025. Do not use the online change form if your appointment is less than 3 working days away.
Appointment is more than 3 working days away Use the official online change/cancel form or call the number on your appointment letter. Changing date/time may mean waiting for the next available appointment.
You cancel the appointment Check whether a new referral will be needed. Alfred Health states that cancelling means you acknowledge you will need to visit your GP to obtain a new referral to book another appointment with that clinic.
You miss repeated appointments Contact the clinic as soon as possible. If you do not attend two consecutive appointments without notifying Alfred Health, you may be discharged from the service and need a new referral.
You are unwell before a face-to-face visit Call (03) 9076 2025 or email op.referrals@alfred.org.au. If you have fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath or are self-isolating, change the appointment arrangement before attending.

What to bring to a Specialist Outpatient appointment

  • Your appointment letter, either on your phone or printed.
  • Medicare card, DVA card and any valid concession cards.
  • An up-to-date medication list, which can be an electronic list on your phone.
  • Relevant tests or investigation results completed before the appointment.
  • TAC or WorkCover claim details if relevant.
  • A support person only if you need communication, sensory, behavioural, understanding or care assistance.
Timing tip: Alfred Health says clinic delays can happen and you may need to see more than one specialist, so be prepared to stay two to three hours.

General wards Visiting hours are 10:00am-1:00pm and 3:00pm-7:00pm. Visitors may be asked to leave the ward area between visiting times.
Bedside limit Multiple visitors may be welcome in general wards, but only 2 visitors are allowed at the bedside at one time. Coordinate with family so the bedside does not become crowded.
ICU Speak to ICU staff for current visiting restrictions and times. ICU generally limits visitors to close family and/or friends, with two visitors at the bedside at any time. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Masks may be required.
Critical, palliative or complex disability situations Special considerations may apply. Ask ward staff for visiting arrangements.
