Emergency Department: what happens, why you wait and what to bring

Emergency is not first-come-first-served. Triage helps staff treat the most unwell patients first, including ambulance arrivals.
Step What happens at NBH Emergency What you should do
1. Arrival and triage You are assessed by the triage nurse. Ambulance patients are also triaged and enter at the side of the department. Explain the main symptom, when it started, what changed and any serious medical conditions.
2. Waiting A senior clinical nurse may see you while you wait and may start treatment, examinations or minor procedures. Tell the triage nurse if pain, breathing, bleeding, confusion or symptoms worsen.
3. Tests before doctor You may have x-rays, tests or specialist consults while still in the waiting room. Do not leave without telling staff if you have already been triaged.
4. Food and drink NBH advises not to eat without checking with the triage nurse because eating can delay tests or an operation. Ask before drinking or eating, especially if surgery, imaging or sedation may be needed.
5. Treatment area If you need to come inside Emergency, a nurse or doctor allocates a space and briefs other nursing staff. Repeat key medication, allergy and medical history details if asked.
6. After assessment You may need more tests, specialist review, discharge home, or admission to hospital. Before leaving, ask for your treatment plan, medication changes, follow-up steps and medical certificate if needed.

Emergency support available while waiting

  • Pain relief when clinically appropriate.
  • Interpreter support.
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander liaison officer support.
  • Social worker support.
  • Information about what is happening with your care.

Emergency visitor and drop-off rules

Visitors inside Emergency Limit visitors to two inside the Emergency Department. Visitors may be asked to leave some areas during treatment.
Emergency drop-off There is a 15-minute drop-off/pick-up bay outside Emergency, but spaces are limited.
Parking after drop-off NBH recommends dropping off the patient or accompanying them inside, then parking in the multi-storey car park on the west side of the hospital.
Refreshments There is a beverage vending machine inside Emergency and more food/vending in the Atrium, but check with triage before eating or drinking.
Behaviour Violent, threatening or abusive behaviour can result in removal by staff or police.

Medical Centre: walk-in urgent GP care at Northern Beaches Hospital
