Specialist outpatient appointments, referrals, check-in and telehealth
Metro South Health outpatient clinics provide specialist medical and surgical services for patients who need specialist review but do not need to stay in hospital. PA Hospital outpatient appointments are usually referral-based.
Micro guide: how a PA Hospital outpatient appointment works
| Step | What happens | Patient action |
|---|---|---|
| 1. GP or clinician sends referral | If your GP thinks you should see a specialist, they send a referral letter to a Metro South hospital. | Ask your GP which specialty was requested and whether test results or scans were included. |
| 2. Hospital assesses referral | The hospital assesses the referral first. If accepted, you receive a receipt of referral letter. | Look for your category number and expected wait time in the referral receipt letter. |
| 3. Appointment is confirmed | The outpatient area contacts you by letter or SMS with location, date and time. | Keep your phone number, email and postal address up to date. |
| 4. You attend clinic | You may have an X-ray or other tests during your appointment. | Allow at least 2 hours unless your clinic tells you otherwise. |
| 5. You check out | If another appointment is needed, staff can book it before you leave. | Check out at reception before going home. |
| 6. Surgery pathway if needed | If the doctor thinks you need surgery, you may be placed on the elective surgery wait list. | Ask what the next letter will say and who to call if symptoms change. |

Medicare, private insurance, medicine costs and travel support
Public patient with Medicare
If you are a public patient in a public hospital and have a Medicare card, Metro South Health says your costs are paid for by Medicare. This includes emergency departments and health centres.
Private patient in public hospital
You can choose to be treated as a private patient. Metro South Health says eligible services are bulk billed to Medicare, private insurance covers hospital fees and charges, and Metro South covers excess or co-payments required by private health insurance.
Medicines in hospital
If you have a Medicare card, Metro South Health says you will not pay for medicines you have while in hospital. You may need to pay for medicines you take when leaving hospital, with PBS and concession arrangements possibly reducing the cost.
